Students Earning Their Way to Washington, D.C.

LONDONDERRY, NH - Londonderry 6th and 7th graders kicked off a Personal Earnings Program with New Hampshire ToDo Magazine this week. The students will be selling subscriptions to the popular monthly magazine and earning $8 dollars for every subscription sold. Unlike most fundraisers that pool funds collected to reduce the cost for the entire group, this program personally benefits the student and their parents as all money earned goes into a personal student account.

Middle School Principal Andrew Corey said, "We are happy to offer students and parents a way to defray some of the trip cost which is fast approaching $500 dollars per student for the annual 8th grade trip to Washington, D.C. The trip is a rewarding experience and I am pleased with the program NHToDo has put together for our kids. And I really like the idea of having the students get out in front of this and start earning money towards the trip as sixth and seventh graders."

Executive Editor Daron Libby explained, "The program runs for three weeks and I am challenging every student to sell 20 subscriptions. A sixth grader selling 20 and then getting subscription renewals in seventh and eighth grades will have earned $480 dollars, which pretty much completely pays for the trip."

The students turn in their subscriptions sold every Friday during the month of May. To make it fun for the kids, each student receives a Mystery Prize every Friday for turning in their weekly collections envelope. Then in June, each student is mailed a summary of what they earned along with a prize package depending on the total subscriptions they sold: 2-free DVD rental from Movie Scene, 5-free Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream, 10-free movie pass to Appletree Cinema 12 and 20-a free pass to Canobie Lake Park!

Mr. Libby was ecstatic over the response of the local business community. "These businesses - Movie Scene, Baskin-Robbins, O'Neil Theaters (all on Route 102 in Londonderry) and Canobie Lake Park - really stepped up and I feel went 'beyond the call' for these students. In all, there are 900 students participating and that's a lot of free stuff these companies are offering. But they all wanted to help and we're very grateful for their support."

Faculty Trip Coordinator Laura Lambert said, "I'm excited for the kids because the magazine is really good. They're not just selling a product that people feel they have to buy. I think New Hampshire ToDo is a monthly resource families will really enjoy and look forward to receiving every month."

Every subscriber also receives the NHToDo ClubCard which is good for discounts at shopping, attractions, lodging and restaurants throughout New Hampshire making the purchase even more attractive to parents and their families.

Mr. Libby added, "We have run this program successfully in Cheshire County working with the YMCA and have had almost a hundred students earn a lot of money and win some great prizes. It's fun. The kids are learning. The parents are saving money. And NHToDo is pleased to be offering a way for this age group to be able to earn some serious money."

Celebrating their fifth year of publication, NHToDo Magazine is a monthly, 68-page, full color, activity-based magazine all about New Hampshire's heritage, adventure and four-season fun. NHToDo feature articles are presented in a colorful and entertaining format and are loaded with ideas from camping and hot air ballooning to antiquing and kayaking. NHToDo also provides a three-month events calendar, listing many of New Hampshirešs most exciting festivals and events.
