NHToDo Magazine Helps NH Veterans
Tuesday September 14, 2004

MANCHESTER, NH -- NHToDo Magazine selected this year's Hopkinton Fair to help raise public awareness about the Liberty House Veterans Shelter in Manchester. For the entire five day fair, new subscribers to NHToDo were informed that 10% of their subscription proceeds would be donated to Liberty House - New Hampshire's only transitional house for homeless veterans.

Today, NHToDo's Executive Editor Daron Libby presented Don Duhamel a check representing 10% of all proceeds taken in by NHToDo during the Hopkinton Fair. Mr. Libby stated, "As we support our active troops overseas, I was pleased and proud to provide the venue for Americans at the fair to express their appreciation and support for those veterans of earlier wars. Liberty House stands for all Americans to say to our veterans, 'You are not forgotten and we appreciate what you did for us.' "

Last winter, we had over 500 veterans in New Hampshire without a home. Yet government aid reaches a mere 10 percent of them. That's why Don Duhamel, a Vietnam Veteran himself, established Liberty House last spring.  The programs most successful at rehabilitating homeless veterans are those which recognize veteran status. When veterans suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or other service-related disorders, the kind of support they need can only come from fellow veterans who have experienced similar trauma. Liberty House in Manchester brings this proven model of success to New Hampshire. Liberty House provides residents with daily necessities, a substance-free environment, peer support, and a case management team connecting them to the training and resources necessary for a sustainable transition out of homelessness.

But they need help. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has pledged to give Liberty House $150,000 over the next three years, but only if Duhamel can raise $47,000 on his own. This money is crucial to the Liberty House operation. Your tax-deductible donations will bring our forgotten heroes off the street for the help they need.

Mr. Duhamel states, "I know we are all concerned about our homeless veterans. These men and women have served us, and now is our chance to give back." To donate, send a check payable to Liberty House, Inc., to 75 West Baker St., Manchester, NH 03103.
